Overview

School Improvement Councils were first established in Massachusetts as part of the mandated reforms contained in the Education Reform Bill of 1993. The South School Council was established in 1994 and is comprised of teachers, parents, and community representatives who assist our school in identifying goals and areas in need of improvement. The primary responsibility of the School Council is to create an annual School Improvement Plan, which is based on a needs assessment. 

What are the main areas of responsibility for School Councils?

The law outlines four major areas of responsibility for councils. School councils are to assist principals in:

1. Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards

2. Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school

3. Reviewing the annual school building budget

4. Formulating a school improvement plan

Meetings are held regularly throughout the school year.
