About Our School

Welcome

On behalf of the students, faculty, and support staff, we welcome you to our South School website!  We are confident you will find the information posted here useful in learning more about our school and the programs and the services we offer.

South School serves just under 450 students ranging from Kindergarten through Grade Five.
Here are some of the exciting things our facility has to offer:

A media center which encourages a life-long appreciation and love of literature and reading.  Students are provided with the tools to support the learning process.
A gymnasium and PE program that provides students with a variety of equipment and activities emphasizing skill development while promoting a physically active lifestyle.
Our Art and Music Programs offer creative outlets where students can grow and develop their visual learning in many engaging musical and artistic activities.
We have state-of-the-art classrooms with the most up-to-date technology.

Our mission is to create a safe, nurturing, and challenging environment where students and staff thrive together.

We welcome you to volunteer and experience for yourself the many wonderful ways that South School makes a difference in the lives of children!  If you would like to contact us at 978-247-9800, please feel free to do so.

Sincerely,
The South Elementary School Staff

School History

The South School became an active part of the Andover School System on September 8, 1958, with an enrollment of 490 pupils and 15 teachers.

The Ballardvale Parent-Teacher Association was organized in 1929 as a unit of the Massachusetts and National Parent-Teacher Association by Mrs. George Whitting, then President of the State Association. The first President was Mrs. Miles Ward who served in that capacity for two years. She was succeeded at two- year intervals by Timothy S. Haggerty, Mrs. George Brown, Leslie L. Hadley, Mrs. Stern Cormey, Michael Bell, and Mrs. James Butler, a niece of the first Vice President.

"It is worthy to notice that the father members have shared equally with the mothers the responsibility of the Presidency." The above quote was taken from a book entitledAndover, What It Was, What It Is, published in 1946 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Town of Andover.

Prior to the opening of the South School in 1958, the Bradlee School served as the neighborhood school for much of the present South School District.
