1. How are families and staff notified of School Closings?

The Superintendent will send out an Alert Now notification to all parents and staff who have signed up through their schools. You can also check on Channels 4 (WBZ), Channel 5 (WCVB), Channel 7(WHDH) and Channel 25 (Fox 25) for no school closings. You can also go to the website (www.aps1.net) and cable TV (Channel 10 for Comcast and 47 for Verizon) for notice of school cancellations.

2. What happens if inclement weather happens during the school day?

Generally speaking the Superintendent does not like to make “early dismissal” decisions to shorten the school day. Because there are many parents who work and don’t have backup childcare plans, there may be many students who may have unsupervised bus stops and empty homes to go back to if classes are dismissed early. However, if conditions worsen during a school day, we may start the buses at the middle and high school level 30-45 minutes ahead of schedule. The early start at the secondary schools is an attempt to keep the elementary bus schedules running on time. This is NOT an early dismissal, so we will not put this message out on Alert Now. We do encourage your secondary school child to let you know if he/she needs you to pick him up early.

4. How do I enroll my child into the school system?

All registration is done at the schools so please contact the school directly. Bring your child's birth certificate or passport, immunization records and current physical exam (dated within one year), school transcripts and proof of residency. Proof of residency may be a property tax, utility bill, a purchase and sale agreement, or a lease/rental agreement.

5. I'm moving to Andover, what school will my child attend?

All students in the Andover Public Schools are to attend the school to which they are assigned subject to districting regulations.

6. If I move out of my district into another Andover district, does my child have to change schools?

A pupil who moves after October 1 from one Andover school district to another, may complete his/her year at his/her original school, provided that the sole responsibility for transportation rests with the parent or guardian. But the following year, the child must attend the school in their new district. SC Policy-Policy JCA
