2020-2021 School Transportation

August 20, 2020

Back to school has certainly been a topic for discussion over the last few weeks. After many weeks of hard work and determination by the APS Staff, the school committee made the difficult decision to transport students in grades K-6 only for the start of the 2020-2021 school year. There will be no transportation offered for students in grades 7-12.

Traditionally we provide transportation to all qualifying students in grades K-12. Bus passes were required for students in grades 6-12 and needed to be purchased by the end of July. There was a fee for bus service for students in grades 7-12 and no fee for grade 6 students.

Guidelines for spacing and cleaning were imposed on school transportation by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). These spacing restraints will have a substantial effect on students (and parents) for the start of school. Bus capacity was cut by a third, meaning a full bus capacity of 77 students is now limited to 25.

A survey went out to parents last week which included a preference on transportation for elementary students. As soon as we have the results tallied the transportation department will begin building bus routes for the students that have requested bus transportation. Once completed they will be posted on this web site.

We know this may be an inconvenience for some parents but please know the staff at APS worked hard to develop back to school models that meet all guidelines and provide transportation with the limited spacing restrictions placed on schools and school buses. We appreciate your patience as we work through this new back to school process.

Respectfully,
